How it works · Comparing plans
How the Wizard compares plans.
Every published plan for your area, priced on its own terms against your real usage, then ranked by one thing only: what you'd pay.
Where the plans come from
Retailers have to publish the details of their plans, and the regulator makes that information available. It's the same data behind the government's Energy Made Easy. The Wizard refreshes it every day, so new plans and price changes are picked up quickly.
Which plans count
- Every generally available residential plan for your distribution area, from every retailer, whether or not they'd ever pay a comparison site.
- Electricity and gas, compared separately on their own bills.
- Business plans are left out of a household Reading, because you can't sign up to them for a home.
How each plan is priced
Each plan is priced on its own published terms against the usage on your bill:
- The daily supply charge, for every day of the period.
- Usage rates in their own time windows and seasons, when the plan has them.
- Usage tiers, where the rate changes after a set amount.
- Demand charges, on plans that have them.
- Solar feed-in, including tiered feed-in tariffs, against your exports.
The period's cost is then turned into a yearly figure, so every plan is compared on the same footing, including GST.
How plans are ranked
By what you'd actually pay, and nothing else. No retailer pays us, so no plan can buy its way up the list.
Every saving is an estimate: it assumes your usage stays like your bill, and prices change. The Wizard keeps re-checking so the estimate stays current.
