How BillWizard is built.
The parts that make the Wizard accurate, explained without giving away the recipe.
Exact plan pricing
Every plan is priced on its own published terms: its time windows, seasons, usage tiers, demand charges and feed-in tiers, applied to your real usage. Many comparisons simplify a plan to one average rate; the Wizard doesn't, because the simplification is where the wrong answer comes from.
Forecasting the wholesale market
The Wizard's wholesale forecasts are learned from decades of Australian market data and retrained every night. Each forecast comes with a likely range, not just a single line, because markets are uncertain and you deserve to see how uncertain.
A battery optimiser in Rust
To model a home battery against changing prices, the Wizard works out the best charge and discharge schedule exactly rather than by rule of thumb. The optimiser is written in Rust and runs in under a millisecond.
Bill reading in Australia
Our robot reads your bill on servers in Australian regions only, and that's enforced in the code: a setting that pointed anywhere else would stop the service starting. We keep the figures read from the bill, not the bill itself.
Hosting and security
- Hosted in Australia on Microsoft Azure, with the infrastructure defined as code and reviewed like code.
- Encrypted in transit and at rest, with access limited to what each part needs.
- More than 2,000 automated tests across the engine and the accounts service, run on every change.
- Payments handled by Stripe: your card details are held by Stripe, never by us.
What we keep to ourselves
The models, the training data and the methods that make the Wizard accurate are ours, and stay that way. This page tells you what the Wizard does and how carefully it's built, not how to copy it.
