Guide
Switching retailer.
Switching is usually quick and nothing physical changes. Here's how it works, and what to check first.
What changes, and what doesn't
- Changes: who bills you, and the price you pay.
- Doesn't change: the poles and wires, your meter, the network, or the reliability of your supply. Your distributor still delivers your power.
How to switch
- Pick the plan, using a recent bill to compare on your real usage.
- Sign up with the new retailer, usually online or by phone. They arrange the transfer.
- Your old retailer sends a final bill. The new plan usually starts from your next meter read.
Before you sign up
- Read the plan's fact sheet. Retailers must publish one for each plan, with its rates and fees.
- Check fees, such as exit, connection or paper-bill fees, on both your old and new plan.
- Check conditional discounts, such as paying on time, and whether the price you compared assumes one.
- Know your cooling-off period. You can usually cancel a new contract within 10 business days.
Does BillWizard switch you?
No. The Wizard shows you the plans and the saving, and you switch with the retailer yourself. Nobody calls you, and nothing changes until you choose.
General information, not personal financial advice. Plan rules differ by state and retailer: check a plan's own fact sheet before you sign up.
